The R&B singer and rock act could mark returns to the top tier.
R&B singer Joe and rock band Relient K could both earn new top 10 albums next week on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry sources forecast Joe’s new “Double Back: Evolution of R&B” may sell 25,000 or so by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, July 7. Meanwhile, Relient K’s “Collapsible Lung” could sell around 15,000.
The new Billboard 200 chart’s top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, July 10.
As for Relient K, if the set starts in the top 10, it will be just the second top 10 set for the act. They have reached the region once before, with 2007’s “Five Score and Seven Years Ago.” The new album is not a guaranteed lock for a top 10 debut, and might bow just outside the top tier.
On SoundScan’s Building chart (below), J. Cole is No. 1, followed by the current Billboard 200 No. 1 set, Wale’s “The Gifted.” The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking — reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan’s tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Kanye West’s “Yeezus” is No. 3, while Joe and Relient K are Nos. 4 and 9, respectively.

July 2, 2013
NASHVILLE, TENN -2 July 2013 – Today is the day that GRAMMY®-nominated Relient K releases their seventh LP project, Collapsible Lung (Mono Vs. Stereo), their latest in four years. The highly anticipated album debuts at No. 1 on the iTunes overall album chart, and is also reviewed on USA Today’s Listen page, where they also premiered the bonus track, “That’s My Jam” featuring Owl City, on its Listen Up page.
USA Today’s review shares, “Frontman Matthew Thiessen always a savvy songwriter, has traded the group’s animated pop-punk for more contemporary styles. There’s a newfound sadness, too, one that sometimes resembles wisdom.” To listen to “That’s My Jam” on USA Today’s Listen page, click here.
Collapsible Lung is now available at iTunes and Amazon, and will be a digital only release with physical and special edition vinyl copies available at Relient K shows this summer. Fans will hear the new, and old, Relient K songs on tour with The Almost and The Rocketboys, as well as on select Vans Warped Tour dates. Dates listed below.

ABOUT RELIENT K
Relient K has been making the real thing since 1997, when Matt Thiessen and Matt Hoopes formed the band in high school. In the 15+ years since, they’ve released six full-length albums (three are certified Gold), five EPs and a Christmas record. They have toured the globe, and racked up several hit singles, a GRAMMY-nomination, two Dove Awards and performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’ Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Los Angeles Times has praised Relient K for “its smart blend of punk pop and power pop, weaving together influences as diverse as the Beach Boys, Blink-182 and Fountains of Wayne” while Spin noted, “Few bands play punk-influenced modern rock as proficiently.” This is Relient K’s second studio release on Mono Vs. Stereo, a partnership between Relient K and Gotee Records.
Relient K is a band that writes from personal experiences and this has paid off with over two million records sold, three RIAA Gold-certified albums and a highly dedicated fanbase. As a prolific songwriter, Relient K’s frontman, Matt Thiessen, has paved a road with pop hits over the last four years including co-writing Owl City’s 2012 summer hit “Good Time,” Kelly Clarkson’s “Long Shot” and the award-winning “When Can I See You Again” from the animated film Wreck-It Ralph.
From Alternate Press:
“Collapsible Lung is a bit of an experimental record for us, but not in the traditional sense of the word,” says frontman Matt Thiessen. “We made it a point to pull back all of our usual tricks in the recording process, and forced ourselves to determine how to present each song in the best and most concise way.
“It was a refreshing process, and we feel that much of that energy is transparent in the recording. We are incredibly proud of this record.”
