Congratulations to Gotee recording artist Relient K!
The band’s single “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” from their critically acclaimed album mmHmm is currently #1 on MTV.com.
In a recent interview with NewsDay, Relient K’s frontman Matt Thiessen mentions that he still remembers his last day as shift manager at the Wendy’s in Bolivar, Ohio, five years ago. One of his co-workers farewelled him and his band mates by saying, “See you on MTV.”
“I didn’t want to tell her she was wrong and say, ‘Well, no, you probably won’t because we’re not that kind of band,’” recalled Thiessen.
It was Theissen who proved to be wrong! Having garnered a huge mainstream audience, Christian rock band Relient K is often seen on MTV with their major hits “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” and “Be My Escape.” Their #1 hit on MTV also proved that obscene lyrics and provocative images don’t get you to the top.
Thiessen said Relient K rarely gets comments about being “too Christian.” The complaints are usually about not being Christian enough. “The ones who really focus on it are usually the ones who don’t think we’re doing it right, the ones who want us to say ‘God’ five more times in every song,” he said. “Most people are mature enough to respect what we’re doing, whether they like us or not. Lyrically, we’re just trying to represent who we are as people. If I don’t know you, I’m not going to shove my religion down your throat. But I talk about my faith, and I’m not going to be one of those people who play it off like I don’t.”
